AGROECOLOGICAL REQUIREMENTS AND VARIETAL SUITABILITY FOR WALNUT CULTIVATION IN BULGARIA

1. Basic agro-ecological requirements

Climate

Walnut grows optimally in areas with:

  • temperate climate and long growing season;
  • minimum winter temperatures not lower than –22 to –25°C for short periods;
  • limited risk of late spring frosts;
  • annual precipitation minimum 500 mm.

The most critical factor is late spring frosts. Varieties with later leafing and flowering are a strategic choice in risk areas.

Summer temperatures above 38–40°C, combined with drought, lead to sunburn and kernel reduction. In Bulgarian conditions, drip irrigation should be considered a standard for industrial plantations.

Soil conditions

Walnut has a deep taproot system and high soil requirements.

Minimum requirements:

  • effective soil depth: ≥ 2.0 m
  • good drainage
  • groundwater below 2.5–3.0 m

Soil reaction (pH):
Optimal range: 5.5 - 7.5 .
Walnut tolerates slightly alkaline conditions, but at pH above 7.8, limited digestibility of microelements (especially iron and zinc) is observed. At pH below 5.5, root development and nutritional balance are hindered.

Saline and waterlogged soils are not suitable.

2. Planting scheme

a 6 × 5 m scheme is recommended as an optimal balance between:

  • higher density (about 330 trees/ha);
  • efficient use of space;
  • good lighting;
  • possibility of full mechanization.

This scheme is particularly suitable for varieties with moderate to slower growth (Chandler, Fernor, Fernette, Lara).

3. Regional suitability and varietal recommendations

1. Northern Bulgaria (Danube Plain)

Suitable varieties:
Fernor, Fernette, Chandler, Franquette, Lara, Tulare, Red Livermore

Main risks:

  • Late spring frosts
  • Cold winters (locally down to –25°C)
  • Summer droughts
  • Continental temperature amplitudes

Recommendations:

  • Preference for later leafing varieties (Fernor, Fernette, Franquette) in salt-risk areas
  • Planting on terrain with good air drainage
  • Mandatory irrigation on light soils
  • Inclusion of a minimum of 10–15% pollinators
  • 6 × 5 m scheme for industrial plantations

2. Southern Bulgaria (Thracian Plain)

Suitable varieties:
Fernor, Fernette, Chandler, Franquette, Lara, Tulare, Red Livermore

Main risks:

  • Prolonged drought
  • Summer temperatures above 38–40°C
  • Sunburn
  • High water deficit in the absence of irrigation

Recommendations:

  • Drip irrigation as standard
  • Controlled nitrogen fertilization
  • Maintaining a well-formed crown to limit burn
  • Tulare, Chandler and Lara perform very well with water provided
  • Fernor and Fernette – a solid choice for more continental areas

3. Western Bulgaria (valleys and semi-mountainous areas)

Suitable varieties:
Fernor, Fernette, Chandler, Franquette, Lara, Tulare, Red Livermore

Main risks:

  • Temperature inversions
  • Late frosts in the valleys
  • Shorter growing season (locally)

Recommendations:

  • Avoiding valley bottoms
  • Preference for Fernor, Fernette and Franquette in riskier areas
  • Chandler and Lara – in warmer and well-ventilated terrain
  • Mandatory agroclimatic assessment before creating an array

4. Eastern Bulgaria (Dobrudja and Black Sea region)

Suitable varieties:
Fernor, Fernette, Chandler, Franquette, Lara, Tulare, Red Livermore

Main risks:

  • Strong winds
  • Drying
  • Carbonate soils with higher pH
  • Bacterial blight in wetter coastal areas

Recommendations:

  • Creating windbreaks
  • Soil analysis at pH above 7.5
  • Irrigation on demand in Dobrudja
  • Fernor and Franquette – a more sustainable choice for interior parts
  • Chandler and Lara – suitable for good water conditions

5. Pre-Balkan and foothill regions

Up to 1200 m above sea level

Suitable varieties:
Franquette, Chandler

Main risks:

  • Shorter growing season
  • Lower average temperatures
  • Late frosts

Recommendations:

  • Planting on southern and southwestern slopes
  • Avoiding shady and cold-retaining terrain
  • Strict estimation of temperature amplitude

Above 1200 m above sea level

Suitable varieties:
Fernor, Fernette

Main risks:

  • Insufficient heat amount
  • Increased risk of frostbite
  • Shortened growing season

Recommendations:

  • Only with proven climatic suitability
  • Good drainage and protected terrain
  • Lower density in stronger winds

Conclusion

Successful walnut production in Bulgaria requires a combination of:

  • correct terrain;
  • optimal soil profile and pH 5.5–7.5;
  • reliable water supply;
  • recommended scheme 6 × 5 m;
  • varietal compatibility with the region.

The strategic selection of varieties such as Chandler, Lara, Fernor, Fernette, Franquette, Tulare allows for the adaptation of production to the different agroclimatic conditions in the country and the achievement of stable, long-term yields.
