Grafted Walnut Trees

To be able to achieve maximum yields with your walnut orchard it is crucial to plant grafted walnut trees, as the certified walnut varieties which we produce guarantee perfect harvest as well as equally high-quality nuts.

The main walnut cultivars that we supply all over Europe are Chandler, Lara, Fernor, Fernette, Franquette and Tulare

Additionally, we will also start to offer the following walnut varieties in smaller amounts:  Red Livermore, Tiszacsécsi 83, Bonifac, Alsószentiváni 118, Alsószentiváni 117,Alsószentiváni 117 Kései

In the winter months during dormant stage all walnut trees are taken out of the ground. In order to harvest walnut trees in the best available quality it is very important that the trees have fully lost their leaves. In our part of Bulgaria, the earliest possible time to harvest trees is end of November.

This is part of working with the laws of nature and in this manner, we will deliver your bare-rooted walnut trees in the best possible quality. To make sure that your walnut saplings arrive in the best condition we work hand in hand with express logistic companies, which are very competitive in price.

Walnut grafting success

The technique of grafting walnut trees has a long tradition and needs plenty of experience and expertise to reach high grafting success rates.

The method joins the rootstock and the scion wood. This horticultural technique is successful once the vascular tissues of the upper part (scion) and lower part (rootstock) is joined. This process is called inosculation

There are a couple of different grafting methods during different times of the year. Choosing the right method depends mainly on geographical position and resulting day and night temperatures as well as humidity levels.

Whatever method is chosen the crucial part of the entire grafting process is that the vascular cambium of the walnut rootstock and the scion wood is joined very precise and is kept alive until the scion has been“accepted” by the rootstock.

Why to plant grafted walnut trees?

The answer is very simple: because it is desirable to receive from your walnut tree high yields with large and tasty nuts. You want to have one size of nuts in a unified shape and color. The larger the scale of your walnut business is, the more important are those factors as the possibilities to market your nuts grow with the quality of the nuts.

What rootstock is chosen?

We decided to graft all trees on common walnuts (Juglans regia) also known as Persian walnut, English walnut, Carpathian walnut and Madeira walnut. This is especially important because there is a high risk of virus infections (cherry leaf roll virus) in walnut trees grafted on other rootstocks like black walnut (Juglans nigra). Additionally, all of our trees and rootstocks are virus free (regular phytosanitary tests) and certified under European Union standards.

Main walnut cultivars

The most common walnut variety is Chandler, in combination with Franquette or Fernette as pollinator variety. Chandler is such an important variety due to the very high and reliable yields as well as the top marketability of the nut in shell or the ready kernel. The nut is very tasty and the light color of the kernel makes it even more interesting. You can reach with the Chandler variety more than 30-40kg per tree after 10 years.

Investment in the future

In times of no or even negative interest rates the investment in walnut orchards does not only promise high profits, but also a secure investment into the future. Of course, you cannot expect to reach a return of investment within the first 3 years, but from there on your return and profit will grow with time. Food and especially high value food has a growing demand.
